COUNTER-WEIGHT SEAT

Fort Mason San Francisco, California | while at Pfau Long Architecture

The project is to create a chair for the SEAT/an Outdoor Chair Show at the historic Fort Mason Center.  A counterbalance mechanism, using sea water for ballast, a fulcrum and a steel beam, allows a single person seat to be cantilevered 20 feet out over the water.  Once past the controlled access gate, the experience of passage out (over a transparent grating) and of being seated in the more enclosed outboard end, allow a visceral relation to the bay below and a new perspective on the waterfront environment.
